Cyber Essentials Scheme
Mindful of the threat of cyber attacks, the Government has launched its Cyber Essentials scheme for organisations and businesses.
Cyber attacks come in many forms but the vast majority tend to be rather basic and made by people with relatively little expertise.
However, they can still cause damage and disruption; and, more importantly, if a basic cyber attack is successful it can tip-off criminals that you’re vulnerable to a more extreme digital assault.
So it’s important to repel the first attack, and that’s the purpose of Cyber Essentials. There are two levels of certification:
- Cyber Essentials – this is the self-assessment option which helps you question and test your defences, showing you how to prevent the most common cyber attacks. You then provide written evidence to the Cyber Essentials team who decide if you meet the standard acquired for certification.
- Cyber Essentials Plus – the same process as Cyber Essentials but a hands-on technical verification is carried out, instead of self-assessment.

Acquiring Cyber Essentials provides peace of mind, not just to you but also your clients. It can also help you to attract new customers – some Government contracts require Cyber Essentials certification.
